Thank You Bethany

On just the third day of school, Bethany wrote me a very kind note.  I'm fortunate to meet some of the best students in their senior year.  By all accounts, Bethany is going to do just great in all of her classes this year.  (From 8/21/2019)

Thank You Brigid

Brigid was my table reading partner during my AP Statistics Exam Reading 2019.  She was wonderful to work with.  On Tuesday, I received a box during class.  Inside was a box of beautiful case with cookies inside.  It was such a surprise and it brought back the fun memories I had with Brigid in June.  Thank you, Brigid!  (From 8/20/2019)

I immediately texted Brigid a huge "Thank You".

Bonita Glen Davis Stadium Opening

We won on the opening night of our new stadium.  The home side now includes a student section.  I had a great time seeing students and hanging out with other staff members Friday night.  Below are also pictures of my AP students Jacob and Ethan, they both scored touchdowns on a huge victory over Arroyo.  (From 8/23/2019)

My Favorite Trio: Dana, Kimberly, Melissa

Trio = Kim + Melissa + Dana

This was the best Week One of teaching in my career.  At the end of an exciting Day One, I received an email from Melissa saying that the trio will visit Tuesday's volleyball game.  They also wanted to see me before moving to college on Friday.  That night, I purchased three small photo frames for a picture that the four of us took together at June's graduation.  I was thrilled to see them at the gym on Tuesday.  To my surprise, they gave me a personalized gift.  I was beyond happy.  The girls are wonderful students and extremely kind, I am so proud of them.  Thank you, Dana, Kim, and Melissa. (From 8/20/2019)

I love this customized mug from the students.

I joked in class the next day that these girls are indeed among the trio of my favorite trios. The other two would be Eichen+Mullen+Frederick, followed by Thai Ice Tea + Beef Pho + Salted Fish Chicken Fried Rice.

Update: Dana replied and said that she placed the magnetic photo frame on her dorm's mini-fridge. Best wishes to their freshmen year!

Bonita Day Two Professional Development

Day Two began with breakfast and a few presentations at the Bonita Center of the Arts. (8/15/2019)

Notes: Of the 344 USD in CA, only 10% reached 70%/60% proficiency in ELA/Math.  Only 11 districts reached 80%/70%.  Currently, our preliminary scores of 72%/61% places us in top 10% in ELA and top 15% in Math.  Our goal is to reach the 80%/70% mark.

Mr. Yip Version 15.0

This will be my 15th year as a high school math teacher.  I'm repeating my assignments from last year.  One section of AP Statistics, two sections of AP Calculus, and two sections of Integrated Math III.  Teachers are doing something fun for the yearbook by all wearing the same Hawaiian shirt in the staff photos.  The photographers were willing to print out a second ID for us. I'm looking forward to another great year at Bonita High School.  (8/14/2019)

APU Refresher Courses - Summer 2019

I took advantage of two free refresher course offerings at Azusa Pacific University this summer.  For five weeks, I took a calculus class on Monday nights and a linear algebra class on Wednesday nights.  Professor Hogue did a wonderful job at presenting challenging materials in a short span of time.  I love that the school ID misspelled my name. RDX - All-Season Floor Mats

Accessory - All-Season Floor Mats

These mat fit really well as expected.  Although I have heard that WeatherTech made better mats, they were much more expensive.  So far, I have been satisfied with these OEM mats.

"An ideal way to save wear and tear on your original carpets, the All-Season Floor Mats are designed to trap and hold dirt, sand, mud, and water."

-Raised perimeter wall design helps provide more coverage and additional protection
-Includes front and rear mats
-Durable rubber material cleans easily with mild soap and water
-Custom-colored RDX logo is molded in for a premium look
MSRP: $175 (I found these for $125 including S/H on eBay.)

Juniors Turn Seniors

After spending an hour and a half in the classroom with me during finals block schedule, these two girls (Camille and Margia) return for an end of year photo. Can I finally get rid of you guys?  =)
Only kidding, these are two of the top juniors who will help out during Thursday's graduation.  (From 6/5/2019).

RDX - Temporary Wheel Kit

Accessory - Spare Tire Kit

Some models of the 3rd generation RDX models do not come with a spare tire.  For these models, a repair kit (with air pump and sealant) is included.  I'm comfortable with a spare tire and invested some money on the spare tire kit.  To save money, I installed it myself.  It was not a difficult job, the research took most of my time.  The entire installation took just around an hour.  The most difficult part was the removal of the tight screws on the tie-down hooks on the cargo strips.  The process went smoothly for me.  In fact, this kit was easier to install than the splash guard set.  The kit does not come with a tire, however.  I purchased the tire separately at America's Tires. For $130, America's Tires installed the 155/90-D70 spare tire on the wheel for me.  The purchase will also allow me to receive routine tire rotation for this vehicle.  I think that's a great value.

Hint: The kit's instructions states that the "Tool Box Lid" AND "Spare Tire Plug Cap" should not be reuse, however I found no problem with using them again.

MSRP $300 (I found it for $266 including S/H at Curry Acura.)

New AP Course Binders

The College Board sent AP teachers updated Course and Exam Descriptions (CEDs).  I finally received my copies.  I do not take for granted that I get to teach both AP math courses.  Looking forward to seeing the updates on both of these wonderful courses.  (From 7/23/2019).

RDX - Splash Guard Set

Accessory - Splash Guard Set

These were a pain to install if you do not remove the tires.  It took me just about five minutes to install the front pair of guards without any issue.  The back wheels left limited space between the tires and the inner fender.  I purchased a stubby Philips screw-driver, which is a must if you do not remove the tires.  The fitting of the tapping screws were fine, but it was not an easy task to secure the back pair.  For me, it may have taken about the same amount of time if I remove the tires.  If you comfortable and efficient in removing the rear wheels, do so and the installations would be much simpler.  After a few drivers without the guards during the first week of dry driving, I noticed some debris behind the wheels.  I do like how subtle these look and it will protect the lower parts of the car.

"Splash Guards are a finishing touch that give your RDX a custom look and help protect your paint from nicks and chips."

-High-quality constructed material remains durable at extreme temperatures
-No-drill installation helps protect against corrosion
-Front and rear Splash Guards offer excellent protection
MSRP: $145 (I found these for $111 including S/H at Curry Acura.)

RDX - Cargo Tray

Accessory - Cargo Tray

This was the first piece of accessory I purchased.  The material is a solid rubbery plastic, it should be durable enough for what I need, but it could be better.  It fits great with the fold for the outer section of the cargo space.  However, to access the bottom cargo space, you would need to lift the tray to unhook the lever.  Another award design is that the right trapezoidal piece is its own isolated piece.  Time will tell how durable this tray is, but so far the fit and design is meeting my expectation.

From Acura:
"An important part of keeping your new RDX looking new is the Folding Cargo Tray. Its special contours help protect the cargo area from sharp, wet, or soiled cargo."

-Custom-molded to fit into the RDX cargo area
-Folds to allow easy access to cargo while providing clearance for under storage compartments
-Provides access to cargo tie-down points
-Molded pattern matches All-Season Floor Mats
-Designed for use with Cargo Net accessory
MSRP: $140 (I found it for $107 including S/H from Amazon).

Thank you, Alexis

I found a gift bag in my mailbox over the summer.  It was from my student Alexis.  She wrote me a very nice note and gave me an elegant gift.  Thank you Alexis.  Good luck at Harvard.  Yes, she got into Harvard.  (From 7/23/2019).

RDX - Sunshade

Accessory - Sunshade

This sunshade is heavy duty.  The material feels extremely durable and it fits the RDX great.  However, because it folds to long rectangular sections, it is difficult to set up and take down.  It is also bulky after you put it back into the nice bag.  I found myself leaving this sunshade in the cargo space and I have not used it as often as I'd like.

"The custom-designed Sunshade helps reduce temperatures inside your vehicle when parked."

-Silver reflective surface has soft felt inner lining
-Foam core center provides optimal insulation
-Accordion design for easy use
-Storage bag included
MSRP:$60 (I found it for $54 including S/H on Acura Parts Warehouse.)
