The Inner Game of Tennis - W. Timothy Gallwey (Book Read April 2020)
This book is much more than just about tennis. Gallwey discussed topics about developing concentration, modifying habits, and the meaning of competition and winning. "Winning is overcoming obstacles to reach a goal, but the value in winning is only as great as the value of the goal reached."

Extended Spring Break Project
Due to the COVID-19 social distancing period, I worked on a project that has been on my mind for some time. I organized FRQ's (free-response questions) that I have completed for both AP Statistics and AP Calculus courses. There are six questions per exam each year, most years there are at least two versions (Operational, Version B, International, and Secured Practice Version). AP Statistics dates back to 1997, AP Calculus many years back. In total, I have over 600 FRQs that I can work with. While I'm far from complete, I enjoy doing the problems. I also found curating these documents very satisfying (From 3/19/2020)

Bethany's 3 Q's
Bethany's hilarious and failed attempt to get me to say three things that I use daily (not expecting that I'd include math). Luckily, I already got trolled by Jacqueline earlier in the morning. So I'm glad I named Calculus and Statistics. (From Spring 2020)

Thank You Joyce
Student Joyce (class of 2021) made this drawing of Mr. Mullen and I. I never had Joyce as a student. I sent her a thank you email, letting her know of my appreciation of her talents. Also, after the past weeks of social isolation at home, I am no long as thin as Joyce drew me in this picture.

Missing Our Bearcats
💚🐾💚🐾💚🐾💚🐾💚🐾
On Friday March 13th, the faculty had an emergency lunch meeting. The administration told us that we would close for three weeks, with school resuming on April 6th. My immediate thought was that student learning would be interrupted, I've been working all year to get the AP students ready for the AP Calculus and AP Statistics exams. Nonetheless, returning on April 6th would still give me enough time to prepare students for the exam in May. A week later, however, we were informed that school closure would extend to May 5th. At that point, rumor was already going around that school districts around the nation would be closing for the year. I was already missing my work. On April 2nd, the heartbreaking news for me came when the district announced the closure of school for the reminder of the year.
First, I wish everyone to be safe and healthy. Second, I'm grateful for all of the health care professionals (including my brother and sister-in-law) for their courageous services. Thirdly, I understand and support the reason for school closure. I am one of the fortunate teachers who are asked to stay home and be fully paid. At the same time, my spirit took a big hit when we got the news that we won't return this year. I miss my work, my classroom, and my students. There's a lack of closure. My thoughts are with the students, especially the seniors class of 2020.
For the past weeks, I have set up learning materials for my students online. At home, I have organized most of the FRQs documents that I have completed for both AP Statistics and AP Calculus. There is always more work to do for educators. So far, I have read three books. Personally, I am recovering from a hip injury from the LA Marathon in early March. I have taken on virtual yoga classes. My digital interactions with my friends, family, and coworkers keep me engaged. I will need to work on lesson preparation next. Stay positive, stay healthy, keep learning and keep working.

Bethany's Artwork
Bethany (Class of 2020 AP Calculus) shares with me the artwork she completed during the extended spring break. I give this an A+. Bethany is an athletic trainer for the varsity boys basketball team and a connoisseur of boba tea drinks. I wish I had more time in the classroom before I say goodbye to the senior students.
