ASAP - Mile 60

A Shoe Adoption Project Update - Our friend Dinna (Case Manager) from David & Margaret Youth and Family Services took in some new clients this week. We have stayed in touch since our first donation last year. On Tuesday, she gave me the shoe sizes of three boys (sizes 5, 5, and 7). That same afternoon, I purchased these basketball shoes for them. I delivered these shoes to her earlier today. She told me that two of the boys are cousins who only had old sandals. These new shoes should be a huge upgrade. We appreciate Dinna for her assistance. Thank you to all of the donors, supporters, and friends of this charity project. This has been a productive week for ASAP, I'm already working on the next batch of donation. More to follow very soon. -Ricky

Linear Regression Activity

Using these cookies, students use the number of white cookies to predict the number of pink cookies. As expected, the correlation is a strong negative association. The more white cookies is in a pack, it is expected that there are fewer pink cookies in the same pack.

Pasadena Half Marathon 2018

Here are some pictures from last week: After completing the Pasadena Half Marathon, I stood about a quarter mile ahead of the finish line to cheer on runners. I took some pictures of my friends also. It was a beautiful morning for running. I am grateful for all of the volunteers who helped made this race so much fun.

Sampling Distribution Activity (Proportions)

Last week's activity on the sampling distribution of sample proportions also worked out smoothly. The five colors of Skittles were assumed to be evenly distributed. For example, the proportion of green candies would be 0.20.  In our class of 30 cups, we found that the expected value to be around 0.189. In this case, we did not have enough evidence to doubt that the colors are not evenly distributed.

Sampling Distribution Activity (Means)

This activity worked great on Wednesday. The hypothetical company's claim is that each the fun-size packs contain an average of 16.5 pieces (should try 15.5 next year). Our class sample of 30 packs found the sample mean to be 14.8 pieces. This gave us strong evidence that the true mean should be lower.

ASAP - Mile 59

Including this batch, we have donated a total of 80 pairs of new shoes.

A Shoe Adoption Project Update - We donated our first batch of new shoes in 2018. This afternoon, I made the delivery to Deonne, who is a therapist working with the children at Heritage Group Homes. Her office is based in San Dimas and she will help us distribute the shoes to the teenagers in need. Deonne shared with me stories of two of these girls who are striving to join their high school's track team. As a therapist, Deonne has a big heart and is trying to help these girls fit in. I hope these shoes will help. Thank you to all of the donors, supporters, and friends of this project.

ASAP - Mile 58

(A Thank You card from Deonne.)

Our first batch of delivery in 2018 will go to Heritage Group Homes for five teenage girls and one teenage boy. We had previously donated five pairs to Heritage last December. Thank you again to Deonne for helping us gather the children's shoe sizes. I strive to make the delivery by early next week. I remember that I purchased our first batch of shoes on the same rainy afternoon of the Pasadena Half Marathon last January. I will run this race again on Sunday. That makes this weekend the first anniversary of the project's first purchase. I am happy and proud to deliver again this week.

Thanks again to many donors, I stocked up on some clearance shoes of different sizes over the holiday season. Avid runners may know that 361 Degrees is a new brand of running shoes. Their sale representatives tell the story of the designers of this company having previously worked for Asics. The quality of these 361 Degrees shoes appear to be excellent, I also love the colors and was happy to have found great deals for these shoes over the winter break. Here are some of the shoes that we will be donating this year. At the moment, they are stored in my classroom. I'll post more pictures once the donation is finalized. More to follow.

Happy Reading

Coach Mario took a lot of time out of his schedule to lead track workouts each Tuesday night. I gave him some gift cards to Barnes & Noble for Christmas so he can spend some quality time reading with his family. It is refreshing seeing children's love for reading.

I was also a fan of The Boxcar Children series. Digging around the garage, I found a couple of vintage copies from my elementary school days.

Thanks Angie

Angie made her running friends customized gifts for Christmas 2017. I'm fortunate to have found her as a friend through running. Thank you also to Tony, who is kind enough to be our photographer.
