APSI AP Calculus Day One (7/16/2018)

Ms. Connie Rigney was a fantastic instructor. In our first day of workshop, we made a lot of progress towards the content of the course.  After introductions, we completed three exemplar opening problems that modeled the three big ideas in Calc AB: 1) Limits, 2) Derivatives, and 3) Integrals.  We also discussed MPAC [Mathematical Practices of AP Calculus] and EU [Enduring Understanding]. The huge take away today is "if a function is differentiable, then it is continuous".

Other topics covered today:

We worked in groups to complete three more problems.

We justified the Squeeze Theorem.
We went over the course topics, additional resources, and the equity and accessibility policy.

RADAR is a go-to strategy for many calculus problems:
Read the problem

Ask - What is it asking?
Decode the words
Answer the question
Reasonable - check if the response is reasonable

An added bonus today was that I got to see some of my former co-workers from Gladstone High School. I touched base with Jim, Susan, and Althea, who are all excellent teachers.
