Closing 2011

I am reminded of how lucky I am as a teacher at the last week of school in 2011. My students blessed me with cards and simple gifts. Rebekah is a wonderful student, and a better artist. I am a fan. She gave me this hand-made card. (Left - cover, Right - inside.)

A Sad Week

A very sad week for our campus. Two freshmen students, twin sisters, were struck by a car in a traffic accident on their way to school Monday. Students in my class, some of whom are band members, put this together to support the Fukui family in this very difficult time.

CMC 2011: Day Two

Despite being exhausted from long and engaging sessions from Friday, I was very
much looking forward to Saturday's sessions. The first two sessions were both by Daren Starnes, a highly respected figure in the field, and a co-author of one of my
favorite statistics textbooks (yes, I know how nerdy that sounds). He was an outstanding presenter. The first session "Designing Statistics Projects to Promote Equity and Identity", Starnes introduced to the group several very interesting stats projects by his students. He has a great sense of humor and a professional attitude towards teaching. His second session "Statistics & Probability for Common Core: A 4-Step Process" was equally engaging. We again participated in a few activities together. He also shared some calculator tricks as well. It was an honor learning from such a veteran teacher.
I stayed after lunch for one more statistics session, Shirley Miranda's "Building Mathematical Identity via Statistical Projects." She's a teacher of multiple statistics sessions at her school in San Diego (oh, how I envy that position). We participated in activities and went over how to prepare students to submit project for the class. Miranda's students actually present their projects at competitions in various fields. It was uplifting seeing veteran teachers challenging their students and taking their work to showcase to arenas outside the school. In all, it was a wonderful weekend of learning for me. I strive to take back these learnings and use the strategies that I've learned with my students.
(PS: The downfall of the economy has had an effect on the Palm Springs conference. The number of attendees has dropped. I overheard a member of the organizing team that in the past, there were over 400 sessions. This year, the number of sessions has drop to the low 200's. The number of venders participating was noticeably much lower. In the past, vender booths would fill the entire center hall of the convention center. This year, I think only about 60-70% of the hall was used. The entire isles on either side of the hall had no venders.)

CMC 2011: Day One

This is my first time attending the CMC math conference in Palm Springs on a Friday. I've been very excited for this weekend. In the past, I have onlymadeday-trips on Saturdays only. This morning, I left my home before 6am. Although I arrived at the convention center an hour before the first session, the system glitch caused me to wait in line and to be a few minutes late to the first session. Nonetheless, I'm happy and thrilled to be here.

The first session by Kyle Atkin was "Using Sports and Technology". It was excellent. He gave me ideas and tools that I can use in my AP Stats class next week. We used the new TI-Nspire CX to model a few problems. The second session by Lee Kucera was "Nspired Statistics Activities", which I also enjoyed. She introduced to me the new free web-based Nspired player that can enhance student learning via hands-on activities. During the lunch break, the AP Stats group gathered to discuss a few brief topics. At the conclusion of the meeting, we drew for prizes and I was lucky to have received a new textbook. My teacher friend Tim received a new Casio graphing calculator.

The afternoon sessions continued to be engaging. I attended Jared Derksen's "AP Statistics Exam Walk-Through" where I learned about how the free response questions are scored. Finally, the last scheduled session was Ivan Cheng's "Building Confidence in Algebra by Making Sense of Algebra". I first found out about Mr. Cheng from last year's IGNITE session. I thought he was the best presenter in that 5-minute format last year. His 90 minute session today was excellent. The theory and practice linked together to give me great ideas to help my struggling Algebra I students.
I saw a poster outside of one session about an evening IGNITE session. I loved the IGNITE session last year. Speakers have 20 slides that auto-advance every 15
seconds. Their talk is over in five minutes. After dinner, I returned to the hotel and enjoyed the session tremendously from the eight brave presenter. I serendipitously ran into my friend Matt, a teacher from Baldwin Park HS, who I met at last year's IGNITE session.
IGNITE Presenters:
1) Cheng: Message to Students
2) Teague: Residue of Math
3) Derksen: Tell a Story
4) Brown: Economic Case for Equity
5) Hakansson: High Quality Math and Access of Equity
6) Asturias: Math English Language Development
7) Jacobs: Math Practices: An Iconic View
8) Meyer: When Will I Use This in the Real World
I was told that videos of these presentations will be on the Key Curriculum website.

In all, it was a great day of professional development. I'm so glad I have this learning opportunity. Time for bed, looking forward to tomorrow's sessions.
(One side story: During the lunch meeting, a highly respected statistics author commented on the new AP Statistics exam format in which multiple-choice questions will be released. The reason for the change is due to some countries not playing by the rules. He said that "the Chinese is not known for their respect for intellectual property". I respect his expertise, but I found his comment a bit unfair.)

A Touching Gift

Lauren gave me a very pleasant surprise in the middle of last week. I may have only spoken with Lauren once before. She's a nice kid, a good student, but I really would never imagine her giving me things like this. She told me that she was bored in the previous period and made this for me. I was very touched. I asked her to sign it. I'm having this laminated and will put it on my wall.

Present with Prezi

On Monday's staff development day, I've requested to doing a brief presentation on Prezi. It's a very neat presentation tool that offers an alternative to PowerPoint and Keynote. Additionally, I wish to share with the faculty other technology resources. My focus will be on free web-based resources that can contribute to teachers' lessons in the classroom. Presentations are always fun for me. I look forward to planning and delivering this 20-minute workshop.

Jupiter Grades

It may have been long overdue, but my grades are finally online. I have not dabbled with any grading program; I've simply been using Excel. In part, the reason was that I never spent too much time on grading. As a teacher, I prefer to focus on lesson planning. This weekend, I explored JupiterGrades.com. I like it. I have uploaded all homework assignments and grades. Ultimately, I think this will benefit the students.

Fave Five

This started several years ago; I announce Mr. Yip's Fave Five - top five students in each class period by overall grade percentage. These posters are posted from my window and can be seen from the corridors of the math area. They are updated periodically. (Inspired by T-Mobile's Fave 5).

Gift from Student

"Link from Zelda" by Lily. Lily was my students in Geometry and Algebra 2. We also worked many hours during our CAHSEE Saturday morning sessions. We were both thrilled and relieved when she finally passed. She has already stopped by my classroom many times this year just to say "hi". Today, she gave me her stencil artwork. Thanks, Lilly, what an awesome gift!

The Tippe Top

When you spin this exquisitely crafted spinner, it would spontaneously flip upside-down after several seconds and continue to spin. This is a gift from two of my best friends: Sunny Wang and Cathy Ou. They got it at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. It came to me via London, England. Definitely one of the coolest treasures. Thanks guys.

GHS 2011-12

My sixth year with GHS starts tomorrow. This will be my seventh year overall as a public high school math teacher. This year, I've once again accepted an overload. My assignments are one Algebra 1, four Algebra 2, and an AP Statistics course.

Link Crew 2011-12

After two days of training this week, our Link Leaders welcomed our freshmen class of 2015. Mr. C. and I are very proud of our leaders. As I roam their classrooms through their group activities, I was most please to see leaders giving me the thumbs up. It's a sign that everything is going well. It was a hot and humid day, our leaders persevered and thrived. Go Big!!!

California's College System in Decline

This is an alarming study. The LA Times article summarizes the findings by a study by Cal State Sacramento. The full report is also available here.

From the article, among the findings:

• California ranks last among states in funding per college student from state appropriations and tuition and fees.

• Tuition and fee increases exceed the national average rate of increase.

• The college-going rate of high school graduates rose from 53% to 58% between 2003 and 2007 but dropped back to 53% in 2009.

• California ranks 41st in the number of bachelor's degrees awarded for every 100 high school graduates six years after graduation.

Elluminate

I've been invited by my masters thesis advisor to take part in an online symposium. The presentation will take place between 2pm to 3:30pm on Saturday June 11th. Seven to ten presenters will be alloted about 5 - 10 minutes to speak about his/her masters project. The idea is for alumni to talk about how the idea of the topic came about, and to give current students an overview of the process of the thesis was put together. I would prefer to present in person, but I'm looking forward to this unique opportunity.

Link Crew Year End Party

We had a low turn out for the Link Crew Year End Party. We bused only about 25 leaders to the Covina Lanes for a two hour bowling trip. I was surprised that many kids had never bowled before. We had a blast. The adult coordinators participated and we enjoyed our afternoon very much. I particularly appreciated the kids' creativity and lack of inhibition when they bowled with their own unique styles. Above is a picture of Maria and Ninfa bowling between their legs. They also tried bowling while laying down and "Granny Style" which was a two handed underhand toss. I used the name "Best Hair". = )

Senior Softball Game

One of our counselors started an annual Staff vs. Seniors softball game three years ago. I played in the first one in which we lost. I didn't play last year due to my night graduate classes. Today, we had a lot of fun. We won 15-12 in six and a half innings. The kids were great sports, giving the teachers a few close calls. I hit a triple, scored a run, and had an RBI. Tomorrow, the Link Crew coordinators will also do a bowling outing with the Link Leaders. Lots of fun activities as we close into the end of the year.

Players' Gifts

I remember how special it was to receive awards from badminton at the end of the season when I was in high school. This year, the coaches decided to hand out two MVPs, two Coaches Awards, and two Most Dedicated Awards. Additionally, I bought mini-birdies for the girl players and attached them to keychains made with our leftover beads. Here are two for Maria and Emelyn who couldn't make it to the banquet last Friday.

Performance

Congratulations to the dancers for winning first place at the Talent Show. I normally don't post pictures/videos of students. However, this video is heavily backlit and you cannot see the dancers' faces. Enjoy. Music and choreography are inspired by online videos of Kaba Modern.

Varsity Banquet

We had our year end banquet at the Arcadia BJ's, a very nice restaurant which accommodated our large group. We enjoyed a lot of pizzas and poozookies. It was a pleasure handing out awards and gifts to student athletes. It's been a while since we have hung out together. Sadly also, it may be the last time that this same group get to spend quality time together. I hope the players enjoyed the season and our dinner together. Special thanks goes to Coach Kilmer (left), who really is the heart of the program, and to Coach Aldo (right), who provides a wonderful playing environment for the kids.

Show Time!!!

Our first Talent Show turned out to be small and informal. Yet we had a lot of fun. Two Think Together coordinators and one of our beloved campus safety personnels served as judges. The students sang and danced. Brandon's dance crew, which included Brandon, Celeste, Josh, Angel, Temo, and myslef, won the "contest" and received a small prize. I let the kids split the prize; I am just happy that the kids had some fun. Hopefully those who attended enjoyed the acts. Our choerography was mostly based on YouTube videos that we found on a crew called Kaba Modern. They are based from UC Irvine. Below is a snapshot of Brandon and I taking the center stage in our opening piece. I don't normally post students' pictures online. But since these photos are backlit, you really cannot see the dancers faces. Although you should know that the old man with the hat is me. = )

Kaba Routine

After several days of practice, Brandon has taught our small group the entire dance routine for the upcoming talent show. He is one of the captains on the school's dance team, a talented good-nature kid. We are covering some of the routines done by Kaba Modern, who is a dance crew based off of UC Irvine. We are memorized by their creativity and talents from YouTube videos that we found online. The dance routine is three-minutes long, and we're just having some good fun.

Masters Outfit

I wore a loaner hood when I walked with my students during the past few graduations. This year, I will have my own. The green and yellow are Cal Poly's university colors, while the sky blue is from the College of Education and Integrative Studies. I may also wear my honor cords from my undergraduate days. The ceremony will be on June 12th at 8 p.m.

First GHS Dance Showcase

The GHS award winning Dance Team put together a fantastic show on Friday night. The dancers were very talented. One of the routines even featured alumni. It was nice to see the students do what they love. Also, it was uplifting seeing the parents being very supportive. During the last song, the dancers invited members of the audience to join in on the dance floor. Of course, I got suckered in. I hope I won't end up on YouTube, again.

JV Banquet 2011

The JV players had a great time. Coach Kilmer presented awards to the 18 players who came. We also played card games. Frankly, I don't know Mr. Kilmer too well except I know that he like chocolate chip cookies. So I bought him a box of cookies and had players sign a simple card to thank him for a wonderful season.

Teachers Honoring Excellence

I was unable to attend last year's T.H.E. banquet due to my evening graduateclass. I am glad that I went to support two great educators this year. Edna is our school's Teacher of the Year this year; she's an excellent science teacher. Joyce is one of our school's counselors; she is a co-coordinator for Link Crew. It's nice to spend some time with educators outside of campus. Congratulations to both ladies.
Also this week, I had the honor of being invited to our school's prom this Saturday night. For many reasons, I respectfully declined the invitation. I wish the students a fun-filled evening.

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Talent Show

To support our school's first Talent Show, I invited a few students on the dance team to join me in doing a hop hop routine. We had our first practice this afternoon. It was very informal as we try to learn several routines that I found on YouTube. I told the kids to just have fun.

Great Teachers

Waiting for Superman

I finally saw this film today. It explains the problems of public education in the US. I feel that this documentary is well made, but I cannot confirm if the information presented is 100% accurate. The film maker frankly admits that he sends his own children to private schools. I applaud the film maker for stating that great teachers make big differences. I encourage you to watch this film and to form your own opinions.

I also notice that the movie poster features a blonde white girl, yet most of the characters in the movie are ethnic minorities (blacks and Hispanics).

Badminton Finals

Our badminton team finished a successful season by making it to the semi-finals this year. As a fan of the sport, I went to watch the finals between the Cerritos (red) and Azusa (blue) teams at Azusa HS on Saturday. Both teams are strong, well-coached, and very skillful. Cerritos won 12-9; congrulations to both teams. In Division I, my high school coach's Diamond Bar team lost to Keppel 12-9 (see also SGV Tribute article). I thoroughly enjoyed watching hours of quality play on Saturday. The players inspired me to play more badminton.

Exam Day

Today was the AP Stats exam day. About 20 of my students took the exam from 12:30p to 4p. During their halftime break, I brought them juice and snack. As they went back into the library for the open-ended section, I picked up Costco pizza for their post-exam early dinner. Whatever the results, I'm glad that I've brought AP Statistics to this campus and to give students an opportunity to learn this wonderful subject.
ASB students made a beautiful poster for the test takers.

Hours Away

At 12:30pm tomorrow, my AP Statistics students will take the first AP Stats exam ever offered at our school. It will be a proud moment for me. I've dreamed of teaching statistics since about a decade ago. It's been an experimental year for both me and the students as we explore this wonderful topic for the first time at this level. I have made plans to deliver snacks to them at the halfway point of the exam. When they have completed the exams at around 4pm, I will serve them pizza from Costco back in our classroom. Good luck, students!

Ten Reasons

From Seth Godin's Blog:

What's high school for?

Perhaps we could endeavor to teach our future the following:

  • How to focus intently on a problem until it's solved.
  • The benefit of postponing short-term satisfaction in exchange for long-term success.
  • How to read critically.
  • The power of being able to lead groups of peers without receiving clear delegated authority.
  • An understanding of the extraordinary power of the scientific method, in just about any situation or endeavor.
  • How to persuasively present ideas in multiple forms, especially in writing and before a group.
  • Project management. Self-management and the management of ideas, projects and people.
  • Personal finance. Understanding the truth about money and debt and leverage.
  • An insatiable desire (and the ability) to learn more. Forever.
  • Most of all, the self-reliance that comes from understanding that relentless hard work can be applied to solve problems worth solving.

A Great Season

Our team lost to a very strong Cerritos team, 3-18, at today's CIF semi-finals. The players gave a valiant effort; the Cerritos players were just too well-coached. I am very proud of my team and our accomplishments this year. On paper, we earned 11 individual league medals. As a team, we improved from finishing in the quarter-finals last year to the semi-finals this year. But it is more than that. We've bond a lot this year. After our lost, we still laughed and joked in the huddle. When we got back home, I took 10 of the players to Hometown Buffet and had the best of time. We joked so much that one of our players literally threw up. Good, clean, innocent and genuine quality time spent together.

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

On to the Semi-Finals

In today's quarter-finals, we defeated Cypress, the team that ended our season in the same round last season. Last year's score was 6-15, we won 13-8 today even though several of our players were sick. The key today was getting to a quick start in mix. Everyone played hard in the humid and hot gym. I'm very proud of my players. Though our co-head-coach Aldo couldn't make it today, I'm sure we made him proud. We expect to face last year's division champions Cerritos in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Monday, May 2, 2011

On To Round Two

Our team played well today. Our players simply had higher skill levels today. Gahr was a good team with a couple of athletic boys. I was especially proud of our girls, who swept all of the games today. The final score was 18-3. Tomorrow, we face Cypress HS. Cypress beat us last year in round two. I think we have a stronger team this year. With home court again, I like our chances.

Sunday, May 1, 2011

CIF Playoffs

The badminton post-season starts Monday. While I never stressed winning matches upon my players, I do expect us to advance past the first round. Last year, we lost in the second round to the eventually runner-up Cypress team. Our team will play the winner of Gohr and Redlands East Valley on Monday, and will likely compete against Cypress in the second round. I am proud of our team and hope we can play well this post-season.

Individual Finals

On the day of the individual finals, the seven players who advanced to the semis and I warmed up very nicely at the Azusa HS gym. In retrospect, the good warm-up amongst the eight of us foreshadowed the success to come later that afternoon. Tony and Elida lost two competitive mixed doubles games to finish fourth in league. Kalene also finished fourth in girls singles while Melissa finished with a bronze medal. Tony also earned a bronze medal in boys singles. It was obvious that he was playing through pain and was not telling anyone about it. Jocelyn and Elida came back from a set down to capture bronzes in girls doubles. Alexis and Sam won bronze medals in the boys doubles.

Two of the most exciting matches of the day were the wins by Alexis and Melissa in mixed doubles. In the semis, they beat out the number one ranked team 11-5 and 13-12 in a roller coaster second set. Despite going through one of the toughest losses in her young career in the girls singles semis, Melissa played extremely well in the mixed doubles finale. Her serves were near perfection throughout the entire match, which went to the third set. In one sequence, she was actually pinned to the back of the court, the number two ranked team cleared to her and Melissa smashed down the middle of the court with authority to put the point away. Alexis played beautiful badminton throughout the whole match. I was extremely proud that our players played and won with class and respected our opponents and the game.

Badminton Pre-Lims

Our badminton team wrapped up the season with a loss to Azusa HS. While the score was not close (3-18), I was proud of our progress throughout the season. In particular, our most dedicated players Elida and Tony beat an undefeated mixed doubles team. Elida and Jocelyn also beat an undefeated girls doubles team. We finish the 2011 season second place in Montview League to a very strong Azusa HS team.

For the individual pre-lims on Wednesday, across the five events, GHS players advanced to seven of the twenty semi-finals. While Coach Aldo is always a great help when he is here, it was evident that day that I could use more help as a coach. Nonetheless, I've given my players opportunities to earn 11 medals. It is an improvement from 2010 when GHS captured seven medals.

GHS to MIT

A student from my AP Statistics class is heading to M.I.T. Congratulations. See SGV Tribute. I take no credit for him getting accepted. He would have been accepted with or without taking my class.
